May
(6 - 2)
Friday, May 10 @ Etobicoke - Etobicoke 9   Brampton 1

The Royals need to start their season off with another team. Over the past three seasons they’ve been outscored 42-15 by the Rangers of Etobicoke to open their season.

The team opens every season with renewed confidence, adding a part here and a part there trying to create a formula that will produce a "Royals' Season of Champions," but so many things have to happen to make that possible. It’s only one game, and the young Royals will shrug off this loss and come out strong vs Burlington.

Wednesday, May 15 @ Burlington - Brampton 11   Burlington 6

I think what we saw tonight was a much better Brampton Royals and not the one that went down in a whimper vs the Rangers. They showed a much better effort. They soundly beat a good ball team in the Brants, a team that have been through a bit of a rejuvenation post pandemic. But, at the same time we really can’t put much stock in the wins and losses because it’s still too early in the season to look for team strengths and weaknesses.

The Royals were never threatened in this one. They were up 11-3 going into the bottom of the 8th, before the Brants plated 3 to finish out the scoring to 11-6.

Thursday, May 16 vs Erindale - Brampton 11   Erindale 6

With a win under their belt the Royals take on the Cardinals of Erindale. Over the years these games are always the most entertaining games of the season. They are always high scoring affairs, and you will usually see something you've never seen before. It may be early but at the same time it is a pivotal game for Erindale.  With a loss, they will fall to 0-3 on the young season in the tough Len Andrews Division with Etobicoke and Brampton. They need to improve on last years 4-17-2 record.

It was very nice to see the bunt is still in the game plan. So often the offence is driven by a player or two, but aside from the first game the hits and scoring are being evenly distributed throughout the lineup.

Erindale fought back from a 5-2 early deficit to lead 6-5 after 5 innings before Brampton shut them down the rest of the way and scored 6 more of their own for the 11-6 win. Brampton's 12 hits were spread out across 9 players.

Monday, May 20 @ Erindale - Brampton 9   Erindale 3

Very much like the Royals over the years, Erindale's strength has been their hitting. The Royals pitching held the Cardinals hitters to only 11 hits and 6 earned runs over their two games. The Royals 9 hits came from 7 different batters and 6 different batters scored.

Before taking on Etobicoke in a back-to-back series at the end of the month the Royals play Oakville and Milton who are 3-1 between them.

Thursday, May 23 vs Oakville - Brampton 18   Oakville 3

No one likes to be in games like this, on the winning or losing side. When doubles turn into singles, triples turn into doubles, stolen bases disappear, cheering is silenced, and the game has morphed into a practice no one wants to be at. The Royals were fortunate enough to be on the winning side of this one because of some solid play at the dish and fielders chasing down deep fly balls.

A long first inning, 3 run home run, ignited the Royals bats. They scored 3 times in each of the first three innings, a single run in the fourth, then the onslaught of 8 runs in the 5th inning to finish the scoring.

The teams pitching has much improved in their first 5 games. In their first game they were averaging 24.4 pitches per inning and last night reduced it 14.5 pitches per inning. This will allow them to pitch deeper in tournament games later in the season.

Wednesday, May 29 @ Milton - Brampton 10   Milton 4

So much of this game is using what the other team gives you, Milton was offering and Brampton was taking. In the opening frame the Royals started with a single, an out, forced two errors, an out, a walk, to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom half of the 1st Brampton almost gave it back. After a couple of ground outs, Milton loaded the bases but a comebacker to the mound ended the inning.

I love it when the Royals get one or two baserunners, they turn into piranhas looking for more blood. They really do feed off each other. 24 batters reached base, 11 were left stranded. That is a lot of offence. 6 walks, 3 errors and a hit batter helped Brampton fill the bases.

Overall, the pitching was very good. It was nice to see when one pitcher gets into trouble there’s always another that will come in and save the day. 157 pitches are still too many.

For this to be a successful season the Royals need to be better than the Rangers (who are still the class of COBA, but this back-to-back series will show the Royals where they stand). Early runs against Etobicoke are their Achilles heal. They aren’t used to playing from behind, so they get all flustered. Over the years I've seen many Etobicoke players get tossed from the game, but never was it when they had the lead.

Thursday, May 30 vs Etobicoke - Etobicoke 10  Brampton 4

What we saw tonight were two evenly matched teams. The score was 5-4 Etobicoke going to the 7th. Etobicoke scored in the 3rd, then the Royals bounced right back with a couple of their own. Brampton didn’t have a response to the Rangers 4 runs in the 4th. The Royals were hitting the ball hard all game, but they kept hitting them at the fielders. With 7 fly outs and 3 extra base hits, the score could have been much different with a few breaks. The score was much closer than 10-4.

Friday, May 31 @ Etobicoke - Brampton 11  Etobicoke 8

6 – 2 is a very good start for a team that’s usually slow out of the gate. Like every other year, pitching is the key to victory. Although sporadic at times, but as a team they are in good shape.
There has been a noticeable pattern, when the Royals score 3+ runs in an inning they win. In their two losses they didn’t have any 3+ run innings. I’m sure the 3+ runs in an inning isn’t the only factor for their start but it sure helps when they score in bunches.

Beating Etobicoke takes almost flawless baseball, playing a fundamentally sound game they don’t make many mistakes., but when you hit three of their batters, walk six and allow 3 more to reach base on errors, that makes it extremely difficult. There are lessons to be learned, even when you win.
The pitch count has crept back up to 190 pitches over the nine innings which is about seven pitches per batter.
The Royals have one more game before they head to Sarnia. If they can cut down on the sloppy play they should do well against the tough opposition.
June
(3 - 0)

Thursday, June 6 vs Milton - Brampton 7   Milton 2

The Royals used the game as warmup for the weekend tournament, but that does not mean it wasn't a meaningful game. It's going to take everything they got to stay ahead of Etobicoke. The team used 15 batters and 7 pitchers restricting them to 2 innings. again, when the team scores 3+ runs in an inning they win. All their scoring came in 3 innings, and that was enough. The pitchers held the Red Sox to under 15 pitches per inning which is very good. They got the first 2 batters out 5 times, and 3 times they had 3 up 3 down innings. The offence and defense are primed for the weekend, so carry that momentum onto MacKenzie Field in Sarnia.

Thursday, June 13 vs Oakville - Oakville could not field a team - Cancelled

Saturday, June 15 @ Erindale  - Brampton 5   Erindale 1

This was not a typical game for these two teams. The score was 1-0 Brampton going into the 6th inning. They are usually into double digits by then. The Royals pitching was the difference in this one, allowing only 3 walks, 5 hits while striking out 10 against a very good hitting team in the Cardinals. The Royals were aggressive with the bats, taking only 2 walks and banging out nine hits. Brampton took full advantage of the Cardinals errors scoring 3 unearned runs.

Again, the Royals win when they score 3+ runs in an inning, and they did so in the 6th. Because of the short bench a few of the players had to play out of position and did vey well. There were no Brampton errors in the game.

Thursday, June 20 vs Etobicoke - Rain Out

Wednesday, June 26 at Milton - Rain Out

Thursday, June 27 vs Oakville - Brampton 14  Oakville 8

Welcome home Marco! It was a homecoming on this night for one of the fiercest competitors to ever don the royal blue. It was classic DiRo getting hit (for the 57th time), then turning it into a run.

What started out as a tight game, turned into a run-a-away only to have Oakville climb back to within a couple of runs. The Royals needed those 4 late runs to put it away.

Joe Ferreira's patience earned him 3 walks and 3 RBI, although he hates taking a free pass, he’d rather slug it. It shows how much of a team player he is, not to go chasing balls off the plate for the sake of hit.

Aidan Murphy had a nice night at the plate clearing the loaded bases with a triple.

Twice the team responded to multiple runs by Oakville. They answered Oakville’s 3 3rd inning runs with 8 of their own, then did it again scoring 4 more runs after Oakville’s 4 in the 6th.

Both pitching and batting have improved in June, albeit a small sample size, which is what good teams do, peak on August 5.

July
(8 - 2)

Thursday, July 4 vs Oakville - Brampton 8  Oakville 7

This was a rematch of Thursday’s game, and the Royals were looking for a similar outcome. They had to really fight for this one.

Oakville scored a lone run the 1st inning, but they gave it back in the Royal’s 2nd. Brampton opened the inning with a HBP, 2 BB another HBP, 2 more BB and a single. It’s now a comfortable 4-1, especially the way Aidan Murphy was pitching. He struck out the first 6 batters of the game, and ended his 6 innings of work with an amazing 13 K’s, with only 2 BB, allowing only 2 runs.

In the 7th Sam Lebel brought Victor home from third on a sac fly with what turned out to be a very important run, even though it was only 7-2 at the time. Logan Janes looked sharp taking over for Murphy, striking out the side in his first inning of pitching in a month. The Athletics fought back with a couple of runs in the 8th. Janes left the game with 2 outs and the bases loaded for veteran Brad McLaughlin who quickly extinguished the fire.

In the Brampton 8th, DiRo does what he does best, causing havoc on the basepaths, Jeminson moved DiRo over to third on a ground out setting the stage for the winning run. On a 2-1 count an opportunity presented itself and Marco stole home. That would be so important because Oakville refused to go away, they instead fought back with a couple of 8th inning runs making the final score 8-7 Royals.

The Royals to Milton for a DH on Saturday.

Saturday, July 6 @ Milton - Brampton 11  Milton 1 DH

The Royals traveled to Milton for a DH on a beautiful, sunny day. Milton got on the board in the first inning but Brampton quickly answered with five of their own with the help of Cowper’s three run dinger to right field. After a couple of outs, they followed up with two singles and two walks making the score 5-1 after 2 innings.

Cowper hit his second homer of the game with Aidan Murphy on board in the fifth then Pinner doubled home Langlois and Dawson. 9-1 after 5 innings. Game over. Final was 11-1

The offence was able to score all those runs was because of Lakhani’s outstanding pitching. Knowing Arman wasn’t going to keep Milton off the scoreboard the batters could relax and do their thing, pound the ball. He threw 5 innings of 4 hit ball giving up an unearned run with 6 K’s, backed up by 2 innings by Hibbs allowing only a hit.

Brampton 17  Milton 3

The second half of the DH was shortened to 5 innings and looked very similar to the first game. Bardoel allowed the batters to swing away while he held the Red Sox to only a single run in his 4 innings.

The Royals second produced six straight singles and a BB making the score 6-1. The fifth inning went like this: BB-D-FO-S-S-HR-S-S-S-HBP-S-HBP-W-FC-S-OUT = 10 runs. The final score was 17-3. The Royals didn’t win the game it was given to them. Colaveilo seemed to fit in nicely contributing 3H, 3R, 3RBI. This was the best lineup I've seen this season.

Thursday, July 11 vs Etobicoke -  Etobicoke 9  Brampton 1

On this, the eve of The Hap was to be a game against the Rangers of Etobicoke, who are currently 1 game behind the Royals in the Len Andrews Division. This game is usually an almost non competitive game. No one wants to get hurt and the coaches will use up their whole bench prepping for the weekend ahead. Well, that’s the way it was supposed to be, but the competitive spirit in their team would allow themselves to breeze through the game.

Brampton used 16 batters and 5 pitchers while Etobicoke used 13 batters and 5 pitchers. The game was tied at 1 going into the 6th which when they broke it open scoring 7 runs. We are now tied in the standings.

Thursday, July 18 @ Erindale - Brampton 12 Erindale 2

It's been a long time since the Cardinals have been this low in the standings. This team mercied the Royals at the Vaughan tournament on June 22. They were dominant on that day, but not on this day. The Royal's hitting was led by Patrick Pinlac who went 3 for 4 and Keegan and Victor belting out doubles. Between Aiden Murphy and Myles Swartz's, they stymied the Cardinals sluggers to 2 runs on 7 hits. It was a clean errorless game.

Monday, July 22 @ Erindale - Brampton 10  Erindale 6

The Royals opened up with a sizeable lead early vs the Cardinals. Even with a nine run going into the bottom of the 6th, it still felt very much in jeopardy. Too often we have felt the wrath of Erindale making a totally unexpected rally to close the gap or win the game. That won't happen on this night as the Brampton hurlers were at the top of their game allowing only one earned run of the 6 because of 4 errors. This was a Murphy's night though. Between them they had 6 H, 3 D, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 3 R. Something should be said of Jeminson's night also, who went 3 for 5, 2 D, 2 RBI and 2 R.

Thursday, July 25 vs Burlington - Brampton 8  Burlington 0

The Burlington Brants are at the end of a terrible month. Since their well-deserved entrance on the Top 10 list of the best senior teams in the country, they haven’t won a league game since (0-6-1), aside from two victories at the Hap. The Royals made sure they kept that streak alive.

For the first 6 innings it was a pitching dual, with Brampton leading 3-0. Ferreira broke the game open with his 7th inning double, plating Keegan and Dawson. They would score 4 times in the inning.

What he saw had to give coach Fascia huge satisfaction seeing what his 4 pitchers accomplished in this game. Between Emmerson, B’Mac, Hibbs and Ferreira they gave up only 8 hits and 3 walks. These four pitchers may very well be the difference at The Elims. This gives the team so many options in Windsor, where pitching is everything.

Saturday, July 27 @ Burlington - Burlington 11  Brampton 8

On the strength of 3 dingers the Brants scored 7 times, two of them in the first inning giving them an early 8-1 lead, from which the Royal couldn’t recover although they made it interesting scoring 5 times in the 6th including Ferreira’s 3 run homer making the final 11-8.

Saturday, July 27 @ Burlington - Brampton 6  Burlington 4

The second game was the opposite. This was a pitching duel. Two Royals’ errors helped the Brants score 4 times. Only one of their runs was earned. The Royals played a patient game, letting it come to them. They opened the 5th inning with a BB, catcher’s interference, HBP, D, BB. Brampton pulled off a gutsy play in that inning as well with 2 outs with Chramow on 1st and Langlois on 3rd. Chramow broke for 2nd and Langlois headed home for that very important 2 run lead. The team committed 5 errors which has to be addressed before heading to Windsor. Good teams will exploit that.

One last game vs Etobicoke before the Elims. This is a huge game if the Royals want to keep pace with the Rangers, and they also have a chance of claiming the franchise record for games won.

Sunday, July 28 vs Etobicoke -  Brampton 6  Etobicoke 3

Etobicoke opened the scoring with 2 runs in the first inning, but in this very important game the Royals took full advantage of Ranger pitching in their half of the inning as Aiden Murphy homered to right capping off a 4 run first. Oh no, it’s going to be one of those games. Between these two powerhouse teams they could only muster 9 hits and both gave up 14 walks. The Brampton pitching continued to show promise leading into next weekend, where each game will be the most important one of the season.

This is not a 0-2 Elims team. The biggest difference between the two teams are these numbers.

             Record       RF         RA        Diff.

2024      17 - 4       188        106         82

2023    10 - 8 - 1    159        205        -46

The Royals have 4  20 inning pitchers and 7 10 innings pitchers in league play which gives the team so many more options. This is a team that can play 4 or 5 games on the weekend.

August
(2 - 1)
Thursday, August 8 vs Milton - Brampton 7  Milton 5
The game started on time, but was under the threat of rain most of the night. Luckily the sprinkle we did get didn't interfere with the game, because a cancelled game at this time of the season would be disastrous for the league to reschedule.

Milton jumped out in front 2-1, but Brampton answered with a run right away. Milton would have 4 double in the game, but the rest were dying quails. On the strength of 2 singles and 2 doubles Milton again too the lead at 5-2.
There no panic in the veteran laden royals who patiently waited for Milton to make mistakes on defense. In the 7th Brampton too advantage of sloppy play, as they committed 2 errors, 3 walks and a catcher's interference. The Royals scored 5 times on only 2 singles in that 7th inning. The final was 7-5 Brampton.

Milton has a couple of callups who really had a positive influence on their offense. They were integral parts of their 22U team that made it to the (rained out) finals vs Etobicoke at this Hap.

Friday, August 9 at Oakville - Oakville 12  Brampton 11
Surprisingly only 3 of the 21 runs scored tonight were unearned because of the 9 errors committed between the two teams. The Athletics went out in front 7-1 after 3 innings, but the Royals roared back scoring the next 6 runs to tie the game. Brampton took the lead scoring 4 more times, only to be answered by Oakville with 4 of their own to win the game on a walk-off. Brampton's offense was led by Keegan who had 2 runs, 3 hits and 4 RBI. On the pitching side Lakhani continued his great pitching allowing only one run over his 4 innings of work.

Thursday, August 15 vs Burlington - Brampton 8 Burlington 7

As we close the curtain on another regular season (my 17th around the team)  the Royals and Brants put on a hitting display banging out 25 hits between them. Brampton took advantage of a full squad using 14 players preparing for the playoffs. This was a back-and-forth game with two very good teams. It seemed like every time Burlington scored it was answered right away with an equal amount. The Royals were led by Ferreira who had two of the teams four doubles, Pinlac and Jeminson had the others.
I’d like to compare the Royals best 3 seasons:
            W     L     PCT
2012    18    10    .642
2019    19    9     .679
2024    19    5      .792

The team should take great pride in these numbers, as they tell the story of improvement. This was the best season winning percentage wise the team has had in their 20 year history. It doesn't come quick, but a team other that Etobicoke will in the not-so-distant future take home the Dr. Anson Buck Trophy for having the seasons' best record.

When you do celebrate, take a minute to give thanks to all the Braves, Battlecat and Royals players that have worn the royal blue before you, creating that most important foundation on which this team was built on. I am sure on this day the hearts of Ron Lutz and Blake Frost are filled with pride. Their baby has grown up.

It looks like there’s a lot of rain moving into our area for the Playoff weekend, so we don’t know what the scheduling will be.

Friday, June 7 vs Thornhill Reds - Thornhill 3  Brampton 2
Brampton found themselves in a pitchers duel to open the tournament. Both teams could only muster up 4 hits apiece, but it was a Royals 3rd inning error that proved costly allowing an unearned run, which was the difference in the game. The Royals answered back taking advantage of Thornhill's error, scoring in the 6th, so overall it was classic well pitched gamed where runs were scarce. Neither team gave an inch.

Saturday, June 8 vs Windsor Stars - Windsor 10  Brampton 1
I don’t know what it is about this team, I don’t know if they tighten up, I don’t know if they try too hard, I don’t know if it’s the lineup (noticed a couple of key sittings today), I don’t know if the Royals aren’t used to playing against teams with this much talent. Very much like the Elims last year, where they only scored 3 times in their two games, even though everyone knows Brampton was a very high calibre team. I believe they are an even better team this season, but are getting the same results. I don’t seek inside info from the players nor do I discuss issues with coaches. This is merely an observation, not a judgement. The team has nothing to worry about, they will be fine when they get back to playing within COBA.

The Royals made the best of a HBP and a double to score their lone run. There would be no rallies today, no 3+ runs in an inning to secure the win. The big boys like Windsor, Sarnia and Ilderton don't care about their opposition, they just know how to win. They will take what you give them and turn them into runs.

Saturday/Sunday June 8-9 vs Ilderton - Ilderton 10  Brampton 3

Well, the Royals made it to Sunday, but not the way they wanted. After the game was halted after 4 innings because of rain, they resumed play at 10:45 a.m. at Errol Russell, down 4 - 1. They still had 9 outs to play with, they can do this. Brampton loaded the bases in the 5th with no one out. They aren't lying down, they're fighting back. A HBP and 2 singles in the 6th closed the gap to within a run. Okay they didn't score but they were gaining back their confidence. The Royals plated 2 more runs in the top of the 6th making the score 4-3. Ilderton put the game away scoring 6 times in their 6th, winning 10-3. The game was much closer than the score indicated. Although the tournament didn't have the results they wanted, they should leave Sarnia knowing 2 of their 3 games could have gone either way. Regardless of how the Royals played this weekend, they are still a team no one wants to play in tournaments. By whatever means, I hope the team will talk about this weekend and learn from it to become a better team.

Vaughan
June 21 - 23
Friday, June 21 vs Thornhill Reds - Brampton 4 Thornhill 0
I was trying to get through the season mentioning only the team name in these writeups and not the players, because I wanted to emphasize that the team is always more important that the players. The players may make great plays but they do it only to help the team win, but at the same time they need to be acknowledged for the way they have played so far this season. With that in mind, I will try to be equal in my player/team writing. I will continue to be critical of the team when it's warranted, but not of the players.

This should have been a real test for the Royals taking on the Thornhill Reds who are the reigning GTBL champs. It took Lakhani a little bit to get his bearings giving up a single and 3 walks in the first. Little did Thornhill know that was their only chance to score, as Arman recovered nicely to allow only one batter to reach second base for the rest of the game. Outstanding. The outcome might have been different if they were successful on their attempted steal of 3rd in that first inning. The Fascia brothers teamed up to take out the runner before reaching third.

With the pitching being taken care of, the batters were able to relax and play their game. When they get into this mode there are very few teams that came keep up with them. Victor continued his hot hitting belting another home run over the right field fence. A comfortable win. They move on to take on the Cardinals of Erindale.

Saturday, June 22 vs Erindale Cardinals - Erindale 14  Brampton 4
The Royals opened the scoring in the first inning on a HBP, a walk, double steal and a double by Cowper. 2 runs on one hit was very efficient. In the Erindale 1st they loaded the bases on a double, walk and an error but were unable to capitalize, but it took everything Myles had to get out of the jam. Novia’s (who I thought had retired) 2 run homer tied the game. Then it got really messy after that. Even the best teams lay an egg every now and then.  I’m sure they will come back strong versus Ilderton.

Sunday, June 23 vs Ilderton River Hawks - Rest of the Tournament was rained out.
The Hap
(July 12-14)
Saturday, July 13 vs Newmarket Hawks - Newmarket 4  Brampton 3
As expected, this was a very good game between 2 very good, seasoned teams. Brampton showed off some aggressive running by Rickli scoring on Ferreira's single to left. The Hawks rebounded and scored on a homer by Darcy Moore in their 3rd.  He would score again in the 5th. Newmarket would plate one more in the 7th and the Royals were able to close the gap to one in the 7th but that was as close as they got. It was a well pitched game by both teams.

Saturday, July 13 vs Ajax Spartans - Ajax 8  Brampton 7
Nothing to offer on this game, other than it was ugly. Don't let the score influence your thoughts on the game. There are many things to straighten out before the Elims, if they hope to compete. The talent is there.

Saturday, July 13 vs Leaside - Leaside 10  Brampton 6
Another off game for the Royals. Dug themselves a hole too deep to climb out of. Time to get back to the comfort of COBA.

Etobicoke vs Milton 22U in the Finals. The two teams split the prize money because of rain.
The Elims
(Aug 2-5)
Saturday, August 3 vs Windsor AA - Brampton 10  Windsor AA 3
Three straight hits to start the games is a winning formula. The table setters did their job. When Yannick starts having fun, he’s unstoppable.

Although Windsor took advantage of Brampton’s defense (their 3 runs were all unearned) they stranded 8 batters on their batters.

It’s nice to see a couple of sac bunts back in the game plan. Bardoel kept digging himself a hole, but he always got out of it. He pitched a great game earning his first Senior Elims win. Cowper did a great job of cleaning up with no signs of rust.

The offence was evenly distributed amongst the starters. 8 starters scored a run, 7 starters had a hit with Rickli leading the way with his 3, and 6 starters had an RBI.

You can only win at the Elims when you play up to your potential, and the Royals are showing signs of a champ. Still a long way to go.

I believe the Ilderton win over Windsor last night lifted everyone’s spirits.

Saturday, August vs Thornhill - Brampton 10  Thornhill 9
This should have been a runaway win, but this is the Elims, where nothing goes as expected. The Royals fought hard to gain a little bit of an edge after giving up a run in the first. Aiden’s double brought two home, then Speciale followed up with a 2 run homer to deep right. Now 4-1. C J scored from 2nd on a Marco’s sac bunt, with no intention of stopping, scoring easily. Now 5-1. Thornhill wouldn’t allow Brampton to take flight, keeping them within distance. The Reds scored 4 in the 5th inning tying the game at 6. Lakhani pitched a good game only walking 2 batters, and 63% of his pitches were finding the strike zone. The problem was, they kept finding the gaps.

Being a veteran team they would not be deterred after giving up 4 runs late in the game, instead they snatched the momentum back to their side scoring four of their own. Now 10-6. Thornhill would score 3 times in the sixth but that was it. That was a typical Elims game. Neither team gave an inch, fighting and clawing with everything they had. Sam Lebel came in to earn the save.

Tomorrow will be an even tougher test as they take on the Hawks of Newmarket.

Sunday, August 4 vs Newmarket - Brampton 10  Newmarket 1

No one could have predicted a 10-1 victory over Newmarket who were runners up to Windsor at the Elims last year and won the inaugural Sarnia tournament in June. To be honest I believe they beat themselves because of the 8 unearned runs gifted to the Royals, but on this day I don’t think it would have mattered who they played, Brampton was winning this game. Aiden Murphy saved his best game of the season giving up only a pair of hits, striking out 6 and walking only one (unearned) run while constantly frustrating the Hawks’ batters. He throws such a heavy ball, batters hit it as hard as they can, but it ends up being an easy popup.

I’ll repeat what I said yesterday about Yannick, when he’s on, he can carry the team, and his all-or-nothing attitude is infectious. That was his first dinger of the season. Rickli went 3 for 5, 2 runs and 3 RBI. 6 for 11 (.545) for the weekend.

I often think of what might have been after C J hurt his knee sliding into 2nd base in the first game of the 2022 Elims. His speed and smarts on the basepaths certainly would have helped the team go further in the tournament. It's so much fun watching C.J. and Yannick run the bases.

Everyone is playing to their potential; anything less won’t win games here. The team has peaked at the right time. This is the fun we’ve been missing out on after all these years. No time to be celebrating, they are only half way there.

Sunday, August 4 vs Etobicoke - Brampton 6  Etobicoke 4

Just another typical game vs Etobicoke. Nobody comes out of this game without battle scars. There's no finesse in this one, just a 7 inning grind.

The Rangers opened the scoring plating 3 in the first, then added another in the second. A 4-run lead won't be nearly enough with these two  explosive offences. Again, the Royals chipped away scoring 3 in the 3rd and 3 more in the 4th. ending the scoring. Again, when the Royals score 3 runs in an inning they usually win, as was the case today. Only one Rangers run was earned. It turned into a pitchers' duel after that.

I'm sure Joe's confidence is through the roof. I wouldn't be surprised if he went to Frank demanding he go again tomorrow. I wouldn't argue with possibly the franchises best ever pitcher. Very much like Yannick was, Joe is in that zone, he can do anything. It sure was a refreshing sight seeing Joe resurface at the Elims. I wonder if he went fishing last night.

Yannick and Alex formed a nice combo going 4 for 5, 3 RBI, and 3 runs at the top of the lineup. This will be a most difficult night, thinking about what could happen tomorrow. The whole team should feel pride with what they have accomplished, but It's not over yet. There's still a couple more chapters to write.

Sunday, Aug 4 vs Sarnia - Sarnia 4  Brampton 2

The Royals have had some luck against the Brigade in recent years and our best pitcher is on the bump. Things were looking up. Big Joe doubled Keegan Murphy home to start the scoring. Sarnia answered right back with a couple of their own. Keegan would score again on a error by their third shortstop. Tie game. A Sarnia runner scored from first on a long triple to right. Sarnia's final run came on an infield groundout scoring the runner from third.

This was a hard-fought game for both teams. Sarnia wouldn't allow Brampton to bundle their 8 scattered hits enough to put a rally together. That big hit never came. They never had more than 2 hits in an inning. Although Swartz didn't have his best stuff he kept the Royals in the game. Anytime you hold a team like Sarnia to 4 runs you are giving your team a chance to win. He did exactly that. Well done Myles.

We all wanted a different outcome, but Sarnia is a past champion and knows what it takes to win at this high level. They are still a very formidable team. The Brigade were fighting for the tournament lives while the Royals had one to give, I think they just needed it more and having a very good pitcher on the mound, resulted in a win for them.

We may get to play them again as the Royals face off against the Newmarket Hawks once more. I'm not anticipating another 10-1 victory. The winner gets to play Sarnia for the right to travel down the road a little to represent our province in a week. This survival weekend test will serve our Ontario representative well taking on equally skilled teams from across the country.

But for now, we have work to do. Let's wrap this up. Go Royals!

Monday, Aug 5 vs Newmarket - Newmarket 9  Brampton 4
This certainly didn’t go as planned. B'Mac being the wily ole veteran he is, gave it his all, but today Newmarket team brought their hitting shoes, riding on the coattails of a huge momentous win over Etobicoke. It didn’t matter where he threw it, they hit it. It must have meant a lot to B'Mac being given the ball on this most important game. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other team for a well played game. I don't think it would have mattered who was pitching, weren't winning that game.

To their credit the team never appeared to be anxious about the fact they would be going home if they lose this game. They stayed the course and never stopped fighting which resulted in 3 runs in the 7th. Sam Lebel held the Hawks in check for the rest of the game. I think we’ll be seeing more of Sam on the mound as they enter the playoffs in a week and a half.

Thank you to the team for providing us fans a great weekend of entertainment. We were following the team on every hit, every strikeout, every diving catch, and each and every one of those four consecutive wins against some of the best talent in the province. DO NOT play the "what if' game, leave in the past. You can learn from it, then move on.

From a fans point of view, THANK YOU. Your time will come.

For every team like the Brampton Royals, there are 3 teams like the Ottawa Ponies. They give meaning to "what if......"

Playoffs
(Aug 2-5)
Monday, Aug 10 vs Erindale - Erindale 10  Brampton 5
The game certainly didn't go the way the Royals had hoped for. The Cardinals came out fighting and took an early lead they wouldn't give up. They had a determination we rarely see. It was very similar to the game Brampton lost to the Erindale in the Vaughan tournament 14-4. The Royals seemed to be spinning their wheels in the mud, Everything was in place but the execution. Brampton finally broke through with 4 runs in the 5th closing the gap to 2 runs on Speciale's 2 run homer, but they handed it right back allowing Erindale to score 4 of their own in the 6th. Pinlac would knock a home of his own in the 6, but that was it. It was a chilly, windy night that turned routine fly balls turn into doubles.

Monday, Aug 19 vs Milton - Brampton 9  Milton 5
This started out the same way the Erindale game went with Milton opening up a 2-run lead in the 3rd, but this time the Royals bounced right back when Keegan Murphy (continued his torrid August hitting, batting .556, 12 RBI, 4 Doubles, scoring 5 runs) smashed his first homer of the season. A 3 run shot.  Knowing if they lost, Milton would end their season, they fought back with a 2 run double taking back their one-run lead. Not to be deterred, in the Royals 5th, they displayed their hitting prowess with 5 singles and a double to take a commanding 9-4 lead. They will need that momentum for the next game versus Etobicoke tomorrow.

Tuesday, Aug 20 vs Etobicoke - Etobicoke 14  Brampton 8

Once again, the Etobicoke Rangers have ended the Royals’ season. At least in this one, Brampton was allowed to wonder if they finally had their ticket stamped for the league championship game versus Oakville. Why not, they were leading 7-2 entering the bottom half of the 4th inning, but that was about the same time the man in blue began shrinking the plate, making it impossible to pitch with any confidence. This team has never walked 5 batters in any inning. The Rangers scored 7 times on 2 singles.

Regardless of all that, the Rangers were fully rewarded for their efforts. They saw an opening and took full advantage of it. That’s a sign of a good team. Etobicoke doesn’t need anyone’s help to win.

A cool and breezy night provided the right conditions for Cowper, Aidan Murphy and Thomson to belt home runs.

Over the off season the Brampton Royals will need to reset and reload aiming to beat the Etobicoke Rangers. They have been saying that for years, but the Royals are optimistic of the few pitchers graduating from the junior ranks may be the difference in beating them come playoff time.

This is the best season (winning percentage wise) the team has ever had as discussed earlier. There is much to be proud of.
